DC Immersive Semester in Economics @ The CALL

The Economics Department has partnered with the Capitol Applied Learning Labs (CALL) program to create a cohort-style, immersive, Economics-focused semester on the Capitol Campus. This opportunity is open to all undergraduates in the major or minor, and allows students to:

  • Advance their degree progress while experiencing a semester on Georgetown’s Capitol Campus
  • Participate in an Economics-related internship for at least 20 hours a week coupled with a unique course schedule that allows full-time enrollment simultaneously
  • Engage more deeply with the broader Washington, DC community

Major Courses

The DC Immersive Semester partnership allows our declared Economics majors to make progress in the major while at the CALL, taking required and elective courses at the Capitol Campus. Below are examples of courses offered:

  • ECON-2102 – Intermediate Macroeconomics
  • ECON-2110 – Economic Statistics
  • ECON-2120 – Econometrics
  • ECON-2XXX – Economics of Race and Gender
  • ECON-4465 – Money, Banking, and Financial Markets

Internship Credit

Students will be supported in finding an internship relevant to their Economics program through hands-on 1:1 coaching, bringing an applied dimension to their major study.

That internship forms the basis of the CALL’s signature experiential learning course, UNXD-2925, CALL Internship Seminar. Students come together each week to explore various career discernment and preparation topics, build capacities they take back to their workplace, and reflect with each other on their experiences and explorations.

Students receive 2 credits for participating in the seminar, and 2 credits for their internship, totalling 4 internship credits.

Where students participating in the DC Immersive Semester have interned:

  • The White House
  • Project Destined, Real Estate Private Equity
  • Brookings Institute
  • Business Council of International Affairs
  • Massive Data Institute

Internship opportunities are crafted based on individual student interests and their desired application of Economics in their post-graduate, professional life.

Living at 55H

All students participating in the DC Immersive Semester at the CALL live at Georgetown’s 55H residence hall, an apartment-style building that features single bedrooms with full kitchens, a shared living room, and an in-unit washer & dryer. It’s less than 5 minutes from 111 Massachusetts Avenue, NW,  where students will attend classes, and a quick walk from metro stations, grocery stores, and the National Mall, allowing students to intern, take classes, and engage with the city easily.

Other CALL Program Benefits

Students in the CALL program receive a series of benefits that help them navigate and engage in the professional and cultural opportunities in the city.  Students receive a fully funded metrocard for the semester, so they never have to worry about commuting to their internship or going to various events around town. Students also have access to funds to further their professional development and cultural engagement, as well as access to specialized networking and community cohort events.
