Posted on 11/25/2025: Applications are open for the 2025 Labor Capital Strategies Fellowship

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Alainn Hanson, and I’m the Director of Student and Community Engagement at the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University. Both Heartland Capital Strategies and the Kalmanovitz Initiative are deeply committed to advancing the rights of working people, and one of the ways we do that is by helping students find their own place in the labor movement. The Labor Capital Strategies Fellowship is one of the most meaningful ways we connect students to that work.

The Labor Capital Strategies Fellowship (LCS) is an 8-week paid fellowship that places students with capital strategy teams in responsible investment and impact funds, unions, or NGOs. Students are paid a stipend which is designed to cover the cost of living in their host communities.

The LCS empowers students to gain hands-on experience working with progressive organizations that manage or influence “workers’ capital”, including pension and impact investment funds, or that organize shareholder campaigns and corporate governance initiatives. Fellows gain exposure to a wide range of experiences, from investing in affordable housing, ethical businesses, and renewable energy projects to supporting corporate governance campaigns and aiding in communications and strategy work for union capital teams.

Beyond their placements, fellows participate in educational and networking opportunities with national leaders in labor, finance, and policy. These connections deepen students’ understanding of how capital strategy, labor rights, and social justice intersect in the modern economy.

The fellowship is open to all undergraduate and graduate students, but it is especially well-suited for sophomores through seniors and graduate students interested in labor, economics, finance, and social justice.
