Master of Economics Curriculum

The STEM-designated Master of Science in Economics program prepares you for success in a career in economics or to further your expertise by pursuing a Ph.D. You’ll develop skills in economic modeling and data analysis, and apply those skills to current economic issues.

To earn your M.S. in Economics degree, you must complete 15 courses worth 45 credits and a two-week, non-credit math camp.

While there is no required internship, we encourage students to participate in an internship or other employment during the summer between the first and second years to further develop the skills in economic research and analysis gained in the program.

Required courses 

Summer Math Camp (non-credit)

Before your first fall semester in the M.S. in Economics program begins, you must attend a mandatory two-week, non-credit Math Camp focused on calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics. This is held for three hours in the evening, Monday through Friday, for two weeks.

Core courses

The four core courses you are required to take provide you with a solid grasp of the key models employed in economics and the main tools for econometric investigation and data analysis.

Elective courses 

Elective courses focus on a range of areas in economic analysis and research. Some focus on contemporary economic policy issues. Some delve more deeply into specific areas of economic theory, such as game theory, macroeconomics or financial economics. Others will advance your skills in computation, data analysis or econometrics. To earn the degree, you must complete 11 economics elective courses worth 33 credits. At least five of these courses must be specifically designated as quantitative.
