Applications for the Mercatus Graduate Student Fellowships close, March 15, 2025! Graduate students at any university and in any discipline are eligible to apply. All fellowships still open to applications are listed below.
We offer fellowshipsfor students at George Mason University, for students pursuing other degrees at universities around the world, for high school students, and for early-career scholars.
Mercatus Center Fellowships expose participants to the ideas of mainline political economy and their real-world implications through robust discussion; provide financial assistance, exposure to scholars, and research experience; and connect fellows to an extensive alumni network.Successful fellows have gone on to pursue careers in academia as well as public policy positions in federal and state governments and at prominent research institutions.

For Those Considering or in the Early Stages of Graduate SchoolThe Don Lavoie Fellowship is a competitive, renewable, and online fellowship program for advanced undergraduates, recent graduates considering graduate school, and early-stage graduate students from any discipline. Don Lavoie Fellows attend a series of online activities, including an online discussion portal and online reading discussion sessions led by various Hayek Program scholars. These sessions introduce them to key ideas in the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy, as well as contemporary work in this tradition. It is a total award of up to $1,250 for the semester. The application deadline is April 15, 2025.
For Early Career ScholarsThe James Buchanan Fellowship is awarded to scholars in any discipline who have recently graduated from their doctoral programs. The aim of this fellowship is to encourage early-career scholars to critically engage ideas in the political economy of Adam Smith and the Austrian, Virginia, and Bloomington schools of political economy.
